Poland extends border buffer zone and internal Schengen controls
Poland has announced several extensions of security measures at its borders to manage migration pressures. The government has extended the temporary buffer zone along the border with Belarus until November 29, 2026. Officials noted that while illegal crossing attempts dropped by over 98 percent between January and August 2026 compared to the previous year, the migration crisis remains active.
Additionally, Poland has notified the European Commission of its decision to extend temporary border controls at its internal borders with Germany and Lithuania. These controls, intended to address migration routes through Belarus and the Baltic states, are now scheduled to remain in place until March 30, 2027. The Polish Ministry of the Interior stated that these measures could be lifted earlier if the security situation improves.
