Poland security and border measures
Overview
Poland has implemented several security measures to address regional geopolitical tensions and border stability through late 2026. Prime Minister Donald Tusk extended various anti-terrorism security alert levels from September 1 through November 30, 2026. This includes the nationwide BRAVO alert level for general security and energy infrastructure, as well as the BRAVO-CRP level for cyberspace threats. Additionally, a higher CHARLIE alert level was introduced specifically for certain railway lines to protect critical transport infrastructure. Specifically, the CHARLIE level applies to railway areas managed by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and PKP Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa Sp. z o.o., while the BRAVO alert level has been applied to Polish energy infrastructure located outside the borders of the Republic of Poland. Simultaneously, the Polish government extended a temporary buffer zone along the border with Belarus for 90 days, effective from September 1 through November 29, 2026. This restricted area covers a 78.29 km stretch with varying widths, reaching up to 4 km in some sections. Although illegal border crossing attempts decreased significantly in 2026 compared to 2025—with officials noting a drop of over 98 percent between January and August 2026—officials stated that “a smaller pressure does not mean the end of the crisis,” maintaining the zone to ensure vigilance at the Schengen border. Expanding its security posture, Poland has also notified the European Commission of its decision to extend temporary internal border controls with Germany and Lithuania. These controls are scheduled to remain in place for six months, from October 2, 2026, until March 30, 2027. The Polish government justifies these extensions by citing ongoing migration pressures via the Belarus and Baltic state routes. The Polish Ministry of the Interior stated that these measures could be lifted earlier if the security situation improves.
