Poland's deposit return system faces growth and criticism

Poland's deposit return system is transitioning from an educational phase to a data-driven operational stage. According to the Ministry of Climate and Environment, approximately 1.6 billion packages were returned by the end of May 2026, with 85% of returns processed through 13,000 automated machines across 62,000 collection points.

Despite the growing infrastructure, the system faces significant social and political friction. Some politicians and citizens have criticized the system, citing issues such as long queues, malfunctioning machines, and the inconvenience of transporting waste. Some lawmakers have described the current requirements as an “humiliation” for citizens.

In response to these challenges, new tools and services are emerging. The operator Kaucja.pl has launched an EAN code search engine to help consumers and retailers verify if specific packaging is eligible for a deposit. Additionally, niche businesses like “Pan od Butelek” have appeared, offering door-to-door collection services for a portion of the deposit fee to provide greater convenience for consumers.
