Poland faces political instability amid abortion and term-limit disputes

Poland's governing coalition is facing internal friction following significant legislative votes. Katarzyna Pelczyńska-Nalecz, Minister for Funds and Regional Policy and leader of the Poland 2050 party, announced her resignation from Donald Tusk's government. She cited a disagreement over a Sejm vote regarding term limits for local government officials, stating that "values are more important to me than functions" after parts of the coalition voted against limiting mayors and starostas to two terms.

Simultaneously, the government is navigating a contentious abortion law reform. While the Sejm recently passed legislative proposals, the future of the reform remains uncertain due to potential opposition from President Karol Nawrocki. The President has historically opposed abortion liberalization, and it is unlikely the parliament can override a presidential veto. The political tension is compounded by shifting alliances within the coalition, including disagreements between the Polish People's Party (PSL) and the Left regarding legislative trade-offs.
