Poland seeks US extradition of ex‑Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro

Poland has formally asked the United States to detain and extradite former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. The request, sent through diplomatic channels, cites 19 of the 26 criminal accusations against him, most of which relate to alleged misuse of the Justice Fund, including accusations of running an organized criminal group and embezzlement.

Ziobro, who fled Poland for Hungary in 2022 and was granted political asylum there, lost that protection after a change of government and travelled to the United States in May 2024. Polish prosecutors say the case requires pre‑trial detention and will be examined by a US federal court before a final decision by the US Secretary of State. Ziobro denies any wrongdoing and describes the proceedings as politically motivated, while officials warn that a conviction could carry a sentence of up to 25 years.
