Poland pushes Ziobro extradition, immunity fights
Entities: Zbigniew Ziobro · Justice Fund · U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) · Waldemar Żurek · Polish Ministry of Justice
Overview
After a Warsaw Regional Court issued a temporary arrest order on 1 July, the Warsaw District Court rejected a European Arrest Warrant for former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro on 13 July, deeming the decision final and unappealable. Polish prosecutors prepared a comprehensive extradition request, now under review by the International Cooperation Office and the Ministry of Justice. Minister Waldemar Żurek wrote to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeking clarification of Ziobro’s legal status.
On 27 July 2026 the prosecutor’s office formally sent a near‑300‑page extradition dossier to U.S. ICE, requesting Ziobro’s transfer to Poland. The request follows the revocation earlier this year of his Hungarian political asylum and the cancellation of travel documents for his wife and former deputy minister. Ziobro remains in the United States, where he has lived since May.
Prosecutor General Żurek asked Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty to lift parliamentary immunity for three lawmakers – Katarzyna Ueberhan, Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski and Tadeusz Chrzan – to allow criminal proceedings to continue. The Sejm must approve these motions, though any MP could renounce immunity voluntarily. Searches for Ziobro and former MP Marcin Romanowski persist, with cooperation from Croatia, Serbia and Hungary; the European arrest warrant for Romanowski stays active.
On 23 July 2026 the Kraków Regional Court upheld the acquittal of three physicians and dismissed a fourth in the long‑running case over the 2006 death of Jerzy Ziobro, Zbigniew Ziobro’s father, citing the statute of limitations and insufficient proof of causation. Ziobro reiterated that the verdict does not bring his father back but affirms what his family has pursued for two decades.
