Poland firefighters issue warnings following chimney soot fire in Baligród
Following a soot fire in a multi-family building in Baligród on October 24, fire services are warning residents about the increased risks associated with the start of the heating season. The incident required intervention from the Baligród Volunteer Fire Department and State Fire Service units from Lesko.
Firefighters advise that soot buildup in chimney flues can cause rapid temperature increases, potentially damaging chimneys or spreading fire to attics and other parts of a building. Warning signs include loud thumping or rushing noises from the chimney, sparks or flames visible above the roof, intense heat on the flue, or the smell of smoke inside the building.
In the event of a fire, authorities urge residents to call 112 immediately. If safe, occupants should extinguish the fire source and limit air supply to the stove, but they must never pour water into a hot chimney, as this can cause steam explosions and structural damage. To prevent such incidents, experts recommend regular professional chimney cleaning, using dry fuel, and ensuring proper building ventilation.
