Poland fuel prices surge after expiration of VAT reduction program
Fuel prices in Poland have surged following the expiration of the government's 'Ceny Paliwa Niżej' (CPN) program, which had temporarily reduced the VAT rate on gasoline and diesel from 23% to 8%. As of early September, the average price for Pb95 gasoline rose to 7.63 PLN per liter, while diesel reached 8.39 PLN per liter. Analysts from e-petrol.pl warn that prices could continue to climb, with gasoline potentially approaching 8 PLN and diesel nearing 9 PLN per liter due to rising refinery costs and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The price hikes have triggered significant political debate. Former Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek criticized the current rates as 'brutal looting of Poles,' arguing that gasoline should cost 6.70 PLN and diesel 7.00 PLN. Meanwhile, President Karol Nawrocki has blamed the government for failing to prepare for the post-CPN scenario.
Beyond transportation fuels, heating costs are also rising. Pellet prices have increased significantly, with some retail offers reaching 3,500 PLN per ton, driven by seasonal demand and limited supply. Additionally, the expiration of fuel subsidies has contributed to a rise in consumer inflation, which reached 3.4% year-on-year in August.
