Poland funds rainwater tank installations and highlights building‑permit rules

The Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (WFOŚiGW) will open applications on 22 June for subsidies covering up to 8,000 zł per household to install rainwater‑collection systems. The program, called Microretention, is part of a larger 173 million‑zł allocation from the EU‑funded FEnIKS 2021‑2027 initiative. Eligible applicants are owners or users of single‑family homes, with up to 90 % of qualifying costs reimbursed, provided the project meets minimum criteria such as at least 2 000 zł in expenses, a storage capacity of at least 2 m³ and a catchment area of 50 m².

Legal experts warn that, under Polish building law, rainwater tanks larger than 10 m³ – especially underground or integrated with drainage systems – may be treated as a building and therefore require a construction notification or a full building permit. The procedure involves submitting documents to the county office, awaiting a 21‑day silent‑consent period and possibly obtaining approval from the water authority if the tank discharges into public watercourses. Non‑compliance can lead to demolition orders or fines.
