Poland healthcare reforms face criticism over dental prophylaxis

The Polish government has adopted a healthcare reform package that includes salary limits for medical personnel and increased oversight of National Health Fund (NFZ) spending and working hours. These changes aim to increase transparency in public service tenders and improve control over fund expenditures.

However, dental professionals have raised concerns regarding these administrative shifts. Dentist Ewa Tomaszewska has criticized new NFZ regulations, specifically citing ordinance no. 95/2026/DSOZ, which she claims limits dental prophylaxis for children and adolescents. She argues that new billing codes and service packages are designed to generate savings for the NFZ at the expense of patient care, creating financial risks for providers and undermining established medical guidelines for pediatric oral health.

In broader dental news, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) for dentistry placed the University of Michigan, King’s College London, and the University of Bern at the top, with Poznan Medical University representing Poland. Additionally, the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has released new clinical guidelines for managing acute periodontal conditions.
