FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup begins in Poland
The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup has commenced in Poland, with matches hosted across Katowice, Bielsko-Biała, Łódź, and Sosnowiec. The tournament features 24 teams competing through September 27.
In the opening matches, host nation Poland secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Argentina in Katowice. In Group A, Mexico drew 2-2 against Benin after squandering a two-goal lead. Other early results included Brazil defeating Tanzania 4-1 and a 1-1 draw between Canada and England in Bielsko-Biała.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the opening matches in Katowice despite ongoing institutional pressure. He has faced criticism and calls for resignation from UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF following a controversial proposal to sell commercial rights to private investors, a plan he has since withdrawn. Infantino declined to comment on his future leadership during his arrival in Poland.
