FIFA governance dispute and U-20 Women’s World Cup

Overview

The upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, scheduled for September 5 to 27, is facing uncertainty due to a governance dispute within FIFA. The tension stems from a proposal by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to sell stakes in World Cup events to private investors. Although Infantino later retracted the proposal and apologized, the move prompted 55 UEFA member associations to vote unanimously in support of a boycott of FIFA competitions.

Despite the threat of a boycott, several nations have confirmed their intent to participate. France has officially confirmed its participation, as have Canada Soccer and New Zealand Football. New Zealand noted the tournament’s importance for player development. While the United States is expected to compete, U.S. Soccer has not commented, and the Football Association in England has also withheld an official statement.

The Polish Football Association (PZPN) has reported receiving no information regarding potential withdrawals and remains focused on the final stages of tournament preparations.
