Sejm hosts historic national debate on climate security

A historic national debate on climate security was held in the Polish Sejm, bringing together government officials, scientists, and activists to discuss the strategic implications of climate change. Experts warned that climate change is a 'multiplier of tensions and threats' that impacts national security, public health, and the economy.

Economic projections suggest that if the climate transition is delayed, the costs to Poland could rise to 124 billion PLN annually by 2050, compared to 84 billion PLN under consistent global climate goal implementation. These costs stem from reduced labor productivity, infrastructure damage, food production issues, and increased pressure on the healthcare system.

During the event, climate activists led by Dominika Lasota interrupted Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty to demand concrete legislative actions and discussions with the Prime Minister and Ministry of National Defense. Scientists, including representatives from the Polish Academy of Sciences, emphasized the need for 'resilient hospitals' and policies that treat climate security as a core component of national defense.
