Polish climate security and policy debate
Overview
The Polish Sejm hosted a national debate regarding climate security, where experts and officials discussed the strategic risks of climate change. Scientists characterized climate change as a ‘multiplier of tensions and threats’ affecting national security, public health, and the economy. Projections indicated that delaying the climate transition could increase annual costs to Poland to 124 billion PLN by 2050. During the debate, activists interrupted proceedings to demand legislative action and discussions with the Ministry of National Defense.
Following these discussions, the trade union Solidarność announced an initiative to organize a national referendum on climate policy. The union is collecting signatures for a civic project to address the economic impacts of European Union climate policies. Solidarność representatives expressed concerns that rising energy prices could lead to enterprise bankruptcies and diminish industrial competitiveness against imports from Asia and Ukraine.
