Poland Implements Electronic Tax to Boost Recycling and Reduce E‑waste

Poland has introduced a tax on electronic devices aimed at generating state revenue and encouraging environmentally sustainable practices. The levy applies to manufacturers, importers and distributors of items such as smartphones, tablets, televisions and computers. Rates vary by product type, with phones taxed at roughly 3 % of their market value and televisions up to 5 %.

The measure is part of a broader ecological policy intended to increase producer responsibility for the life‑cycle of electronics, promote recycling and curb the roughly 12 million tonnes of e‑waste generated annually in Europe. Officials expect the tax to modestly raise consumer prices while incentivising the design of more recyclable and energy‑efficient devices.
