Poland implements remote meter reading for water and electricity

Poland is undergoing a significant digital transformation of its utility metering systems for both water and electricity. Water utility companies are increasingly adopting radio-based remote reading technology to replace manual meter readings. This shift aims to reduce water losses, which currently average between 20% and 25% in Poland, and to enable faster leak detection. Companies such as Aquanet are investing in large-scale remote reading systems, with Aquanet planning to replace nearly 130,000 units by 2029 to provide hourly usage updates and consumer alerts.

In the energy sector, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management is allocating 1 billion PLN to install nearly 5 million smart meters for households and businesses. These devices will connect to the Central System of Energy Market Information (CSIRE), managed by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne. The initiative aims to replace estimated billing with actual consumption data, allow users to monitor real-time usage via the ‘Moje IRE’ portal, and assist photovoltaic owners in tracking energy fed back into the grid. Full implementation of the CSIRE system is expected by October 2026.
