Poland inflation rises to 4.1% amid fuel price volatility

Poland's inflation rate accelerated to 4.1% year-on-year in September, according to revised data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS), up from 3.4% in August. This increase was primarily driven by rising fuel prices. In contrast, the National Bank of Poland (NBP) reported core inflation—which excludes volatile food and energy prices—at 3.1% for the same period.

To mitigate rising costs for consumers, the government has implemented the 'Lower Fuel Prices' (CPN) program. This initiative includes VAT and excise tax reductions and is scheduled to remain in effect until the end of 2026. The program is funded by a new windfall tax on fuel companies that achieve excessive profits.

As of October 16, the Ministry of Energy set new maximum retail prices for fuel: 6.95 PLN/l for 95-octane gasoline, 7.76 PLN/l for 98-octane, and 8.03 PLN/l for diesel. While these limits aim to protect household budgets, analysts note that global market pressures and high refinery margins continue to influence domestic pricing.
