Poland intercepts Russian Il-20M aircraft over the Baltic Sea
Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The incident occurred approximately 40 km north of Ustka. According to Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the aircraft was flying with its transponder turned off, which posed a potential threat to civil aviation safety. While the aircraft did not violate Polish airspace, the incident marks the tenth interception of an Il-20M by Polish forces this year.
This event follows a similar interception on Monday, August 31, where a Russian aircraft was intercepted 30 km north of Łeba. In response to these and other recent Russian provocations, Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that Poland is expanding its airspace protection. This includes increasing the activity of the Polish Air Force, specifically utilizing F-16 fighter jets and helicopters, as well as strengthening rapid-response systems across the country.
Additionally, the Ministry of National Defence has announced plans to form the 87th Anti-Aircraft Regiment in Brzesko to add further layers of defense against missiles, aircraft, and drones.
