Polish Air Force fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il‑20M reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea for the third time within a few days. The latest interception took place about 56 km north‑east of the Polish city of Koszalin, and the defence ministry said the aircraft remained in international airspace without entering Polish sovereign airspace.

Poland’s defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz, said the repeated incursions are “provocative actions” by Russia that test the vigilance and readiness of NATO’s defence systems. Similar interceptions were recorded on the preceding Friday and Monday, and the Polish authorities note a recent increase in Russian reconnaissance flights near the Baltic coast, prompting concern from Poland and neighbouring Baltic states.

The Il‑20M, an electronic‑intelligence aircraft in service since the 1960s, was observed without a flight plan and with its transponder turned off, prompting Polish pilots to make visual contact and signal the Russian crew to depart.
