Poland Introduces Free Disability Communication App Amid Ongoing Accessibility Issues

Poland has launched a free mobile application, the Disability Communication Centre, to support people with visual, auditory and speech impairments. The tool, available nationwide via Google Play, the App Store and a web browser, offers instant access to Polish Sign Language translation, speech‑to‑text conversion, document preparation and emergency assistance. It is provided by the Government’s Office of the Government Plenipotentiary for Persons with Disabilities in partnership with the Polish Association of the Deaf and the Polish Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, and is co‑financed by the European Union’s Social Development Fund (2021‑2027).

Separately, a personal account from Anna Tomanek highlighted persistent accessibility shortcomings in public venues. During a July 13 visit to the Helios Cinema in Kędzierzyn‑Koźle, she found the designated wheelchair space placed in the first row, rendering the view impossible and forcing her and her companions to forego the screening. The experience underscores gaps between legal standards and practical implementation of inclusive design in cultural institutions across Poland.
