Poland expands disability support and infrastructure

In late July 2026, the Polish government expanded publicly funded programs to improve the wellbeing of people with disabilities. The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy launched the “Od zależności ku samodzielności” edition, which includes the “Siła samodzielności” project providing sensory-integration therapy for autistic participants. Simultaneously, the “Prosto do sprawności” initiative in Łódź offers free physiotherapy, exercise classes, and workshops for residents with musculoskeletal conditions through April 2028.

To improve communication, the Office of the Government Plenipotentiary for Persons with Disabilities introduced the Disability Communication Centre app. Co-financed by the EU Social Development Fund and developed with the Polish Association of the Deaf and the Polish Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, the app provides Polish Sign Language translation, speech-to-text, and emergency assistance. Despite these advancements, practical implementation gaps persist, such as reported inaccessible seating at a cinema in Kędzierzyn-Koźle.

By early September 2026, the focus on physical infrastructure and regional development intensified. The Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy announced 48 million PLN to modernize municipal swimming pools across 13 provinces. In the Małopolska region, the Active Nursery Program allocated over 2.2 million PLN to 39 nurseries to equip them with sensory and motor activity tools. Further regional investments were reported in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship and Podlaskie Voivodeship to support neurological development and professional independence.

By mid-September 2026, local activism and municipal planning further expanded accessibility efforts. In Warsaw, the Otwarty Ursynów association worked to improve urban accessibility, such as installing sound modules on traffic lights and advocating for earlier metro elevator access, as part of the ‘Man Without Barriers 2026’ competition. Additionally, in the Dydnia municipality, the Municipal Social Welfare Center began conducting needs assessments for the 2027 Personal Assistant for Persons with Disabilities Program, funded by the Solidarity Fund, to assist residents with daily activities.
