Poland introduces standardized shelter markings and safety protocols
The Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration has announced the introduction of standardized markings for shelter points to assist residents in locating protection during emergencies, such as sudden weather events, drone attacks, or other threats. Property owners and managers are now legally obligated to display the international civil defense symbol—a blue triangle on an orange background—along with the text ‘PUNKT SCHRONIENIA’ (Shelter Point).
In conjunction with these physical markings, authorities have released an official 12-page instruction manual developed with the State Fire Service. This guide provides specific safety protocols for various scenarios, including being at home, in a vehicle, or on the street during an air attack. Key safety advice includes the ‘two-wall rule,’ which suggests staying in areas with at least two solid walls between the individual and the exterior, such as internal corridors, hallways, or windowless rooms.
Residents can access a nationwide database of shelter locations through the ‘Gdzie się ukryć’ (Where to hide) service provided by the State Fire Service. The service indicates the availability and access status of various locations, including public buildings, underground parking lots, and basements.
