Poland invests billions in ‘Schutzschild Ost’ border defense

Poland is investing billions of euros into the ‘Schutzschild Ost’ (Shield East) project, a fortified defense line along its eastern borders. The initiative aims to create a robust barrier against potential threats, particularly from Moscow, by installing tank traps, concrete obstacles, electronic surveillance systems, and drone defense technology.

The Polish Ministry of Defense intends to secure approximately 250 kilometers of its northern and eastern borders by the end of this year. This effort includes the construction of concrete fortifications and the establishment of storage for engineering equipment. The European Union is supporting the project through its ‘SAFE’ armament program.

German Bundeswehr soldiers are actively participating in these fortification efforts. Since July, a reinforced combat engineer platoon has been deployed in northeastern Poland, working alongside the Polish army to dig anti-tank trenches and install defensive structures. These measures are intended to serve as a deterrent to potential adversaries near the NATO eastern flank and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
