Poland issues first biomethane certificates and origin guarantees

Poland has reached a significant milestone in its renewable energy sector with the issuance of the first certificate for the sale of biomethane and the first guarantee of origin for biomethane produced from renewable sources. These documents, issued by the President of the Energy Regulatory Office (URE), are intended to support the development of green gas technologies.

A new Feed-in Premium (FIP) support system has been introduced to help producers cover negative price balances. This system is designed for biomethane producers using renewable energy installations with an installed capacity of no more than 1 MW that feed gas into the national network. The Settlement Manager S.A. is responsible for these payments.

Government officials, including Sławomir Ćwik from the Ministry of Climate and Environment, view these regulatory changes as a potential 'game changer' for the industry. The ministry aims for biomethane production to reach at least 300 million cubic meters annually by 2030. However, industry experts note that local community protests remain a significant hurdle for investors planning new installations.
