Overview
The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) has launched several initiatives to support environmental and energy goals in Poland. In late August 2026, the fund introduced the ‘Space for Nature. Part 5) Green Municipalities – focusing on biodiversity’ program. In late September 2026, Polish Senate committees approved an amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act to establish support systems for large-scale biogas and biomethane plants. Following this, the country launched its first commercial agricultural biomethane plant in Komorowo. Owned by Agro-Biogas, the 1 MW facility utilizes manure and slurry from approximately 1,600 dairy cows to produce roughly 20,000 MWh of biomethane annually. Axpo Polska, a minority shareholder, has signed a 20-year off-take agreement to manage the sale of the biomethane and associated guarantees of origin.
On October 6, the President of the Energy Regulatory Office (URE) issued Poland’s first biomethane certificates and guarantees of origin. To support producers with installations up to 1 MW feeding into the national network, a new Feed-in Premium (FIP) system was introduced to cover negative price balances, with Settlement Manager S.A. overseeing payments. While officials view these changes as a ‘game changer’ to reach a 2030 production goal of 300 million cubic meters, experts highlight ongoing local community protests as a hurdle for new installations.
