Poland issues hiking safety guidelines for bear areas and gear prep
Authorities and experts stress that hikers in Polish mountains should take precautions to avoid surprising bears. Hikers are advised to make noise while walking, stay on marked trails, keep dogs on a leash, avoid dense thickets and fresh bear tracks, and never leave food or waste that could attract bears. In the event of a sighting, they should remain calm, retreat slowly without running, avoid direct eye contact, use an object such as a backpack to distract the animal, and if attacked, lie on the stomach protecting the head and wait for the bear to leave.
Medical and outdoor specialists also warn that many trekkers make mistakes before even leaving home. Proper preparation includes dressing in layers—moisture‑wicking base, insulating middle, and wind‑proof outer layer—checking weather forecasts, starting early, and carrying sufficient water and high‑energy food. Essential gear lists recommend sturdy boots, long‑sleeve shirts, rain‑proof jackets, head protection, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a small first‑aid kit. Maintaining a steady pace, staying hydrated, and being ready to turn back are emphasized as key to safe mountain outings.
