Poland: Konfederacja proposes abolishing container deposit system

Members of the Konfederacja party have submitted a legislative project to the Sejm aimed at completely abolishing Poland's deposit system for beverage containers. The proposal, introduced by MP Grzegorz Płaczek, seeks to repeal the current regulations that have been in effect since October 1, 2025.

Under the current system, customers pay a deposit of 50 groszy for single-use plastic bottles up to 3 liters and metal cans up to 1 liter. Glass reusable bottles up to 1.5 liters carry a higher deposit of 1 złoty. While the new bill proposes reversing these reforms, no immediate changes will occur, as the project must still undergo the full legislative process and may be amended or rejected.

Currently, consumers can recover their deposits without a receipt and are not required to return containers to the specific store where they were purchased.
