Poland launches autumn rabies vaccination campaign for wild foxes

An autumn rabies vaccination campaign for wild foxes is underway across several regions in Poland. Conducted by the Veterinary Inspection, the operation involves distributing vaccine baits manually or dropping them from aircraft in forests, fields, and meadows.

Authorities, including the Polish Hunting Association, are urging the public not to touch, pick up, or move the baits. The baits are brown or greenish-brown, shaped like discs or squares, and possess a strong fishy scent. Human contact can leave scents that discourage foxes from consuming the vaccine, thereby reducing the campaign's effectiveness. If skin contact with the liquid vaccine occurs, the area should be washed thoroughly with soap and water, and medical attention should be sought if the liquid is touched.

The vaccination schedule for nine provinces runs through September 30, 2026. In the Mazovian Voivodeship, the specific action is scheduled to last until September 16. Pet owners are advised to keep dogs on leashes and cats indoors for 14 days following the placement of baits to prevent accidental ingestion.
