Poland launches e‑registration system and expands telemedicine in health sector

Poland is extending digital health services. Telemedicine platforms now enable remote medical consultations through forms, phone calls or video calls, and allow electronic issuance of prescriptions, sick leaves and referrals. While these tools streamline routine care and reduce the need for in‑person visits in uncomplicated cases, a medical assessment remains required and physical examinations are still mandatory for many conditions. The services operate under existing legal standards, rely on secure data processing, and shift part of the documentation workload to patients.

From 1 July 2026 the National Health Fund (NFZ) will require all appointments and selected preventive tests to be booked exclusively via a central e‑registration system. Patients must use an Internet Patient Account (IKP) or the myIKP mobile app. The platform aims to eliminate scheduling chaos and “empty visits” by notifying users of upcoming appointments, offering a waiting‑list function that alerts them when slots become available, and providing preparatory information for each visit. Senior patients who lack digital skills can be assisted by clinic staff. Initially available for cardiology, mammography and HPV testing, the system will add further specialties such as vascular surgery, endocrinology and neonatology from 1 August.
