Poland manages rabies outbreaks with fox vaccination campaign
The Chief Veterinary Inspectorate has confirmed six rabies outbreaks in Poland during 2026, spanning the Lubelskie, Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Podkarpackie voivodeships. Recent cases identified in September include a marten in Bóbrka and a fox in Marysin. The disease has been detected in both wild animals, such as foxes and raccoon dogs, and domestic animals, including a cat.
In response, authorities have initiated a large-scale vaccination campaign targeting the fox population. This involves the aerial distribution of vaccine-laden baits, appearing as small brown-green meat or fish-flavored discs, across forested areas, fields, and meadows.
Veterinary inspectors and local authorities urge the public to exercise extreme caution. Residents are advised not to touch or move the baits and to ensure that children and domestic pets do not come into contact with them. If a pet consumes a bait, owners should contact a veterinarian immediately. In the event of human contact with the vaccine through a wound or mucous membrane, the area should be washed with soap and water for at least 15 minutes before seeking medical attention.
