Poland launches nationwide lung cancer screening program
The National Health Fund (NFZ) is launching a nationwide lung cancer prevention program in Poland based on low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans. The program aims to detect cancerous changes at an early stage, often before symptoms appear.
Starting in the second half of October, the NFZ will begin selecting medical facilities to implement the screenings, with a goal of contracting at least 32 to 50 providers across all 16 voivodeships. Some services may also be provided via mobile units. No referral is required for eligible individuals to participate.
The primary target group includes individuals aged 55 to 74 with a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years who currently smoke or quit less than 15 years ago. Certain individuals aged 50 and older may also qualify if they have additional risk factors, such as occupational exposure to asbestos, silica, or diesel exhaust, or a history of specific cancers. The program also intends to offer support for smoking cessation to those still using tobacco.
