Poland launches new Border Defense Component to protect its eastern frontier

From 1 July 2026, the Polish Territorial Defence Forces will operate a new Border Defense Component (Komponent Obrony Pogranicza) dedicated to securing the country’s eastern border. The reform creates 16 battalions drawn from four restructured territorial brigades – 1 Podlaska, 4 Warmińsko‑Mazurska, 19 Nadbużańska and 20 Przemyska – and aims for initial operational readiness by 2028 and full capability by 2032.

The units will be equipped with mortars, roughly half of the 16 000 Grot rifles ordered with suppressors and optics, as well as observation drones and anti‑drone systems. Their tasks will include reconnaissance, fire support, protection of supply depots, patrols near critical infrastructure and, in the future, replacement of the Border Guard at the Belarusian frontier. The reform seeks to combine local knowledge of territorial troops with a larger proportion of professional soldiers, addressing shortcomings highlighted during the 2021 migration crisis and recent incidents involving armed soldiers.

The initiative is part of Poland’s broader “Shield East” (Tarcza Wschód) deterrence program, intended to strengthen defence against hybrid threats along the eastern flank.
