Poland limits garden watering amid drought and alerts on Legionella risks

During an ongoing drought, many Polish municipalities have introduced temporary bans on using tap water for garden irrigation, lawn watering, filling pools or washing cars. Violations can be punished under article 54 of the Polish Penal Code with fines of up to 500 zł. The restrictions, now in effect in roughly 100 gminas, aim to keep water pressure stable and ensure sufficient supply for essential uses such as drinking and hygiene.

Health officials also warn that standing water in home plumbing after long periods of non‑use—such as after a vacation—can foster Legionella bacteria and cause metal corrosion that releases lead into the water. They recommend flushing taps and showers for 1‑2 minutes before normal use to minimise the risk of Legionella infection and invisible lead contamination.
