Poland lowers windfall tax on fuel firms and announces new maximum fuel prices
The Polish government has revised its windfall tax on fuel companies, reducing the rate from 75 % to 60 % on excess profits above a reference margin plus 20 %. The revised law estimates revenue of 3.8 bn zł in 2026, with total payments of about 4 bn zł, intended to offset budget losses from the "Ceny Paliwa Niżej" programme.
Businesses and agricultural producers that benefited from the temporary maximum electricity price must submit public‑aid information to their energy sellers by 30 June 2026. Failure to do so may result in a costly recalculation of bills, potentially adding thousands of zlotys.
Effective Thursday, new maximum retail fuel prices were announced: 95 octane gasoline capped at 5.92 zł per litre and diesel at 6.43 zł per litre. The lower prices result from a temporary VAT reduction to 8 % and EU‑minimum excise rates valid until 15 June. Retailers charging above the caps face fines up to 1 m zł.
