Poland mandates remote utility meters, bans coal heating by 2027
Poland has set a nationwide deadline of 1 January 2027 for replacing water meters and heat meters that lack remote‑reading capability. The main water meter, owned by the water‑service companies, must be swapped free of charge; costs are covered by the supplier. Property owners who fail to comply may face fines of up to 10,000 zł, and the programme primarily targets multi‑unit residential blocks.
At the same time, new anti‑smog regulations are phasing out the use of coal, eco‑coal and pellet‑based heating. Old, unclassified boilers (“kopciuchy”) are already prohibited, with class‑3 and class‑4 units expected to be retired by the end of 2027‑2028 and class‑5 units allowed only until a full ban on fossil‑fuel heating is introduced, slated for 2040. The EU‑driven plan also aims for all new residential buildings to meet zero‑emission standards by 2030.
