On 30 July 2026 an unidentified object entered Polish airspace near the village of Tarnawa‑Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship during a large‑scale Russian missile attack on Ukraine. Polish authorities scrambled an F‑16 fighter, activated national air‑defence and ground‑defence systems, and NATO also put its air and ground defences on alert. The object disappeared from radar six minutes later and fragments were later recovered from a field, leaving a crater about 10 metres across in an uninhabited area. No casualties or material damage were reported. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the missile was most likely a Russian Kh‑101 ballistic missile, that Poland was ready to shoot it down if it continued its flight, and that the incident was not aimed at Poland. NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte called the breach a reckless act by Russia. Ukrainian officials offered technical assistance for the investigation, while misinformation about the event circulated online.

Polish emergency sirens sounded briefly, and a coordination team of the prime minister, the defence minister and security services was convened to oversee the investigation. The crater and debris were examined by police, the prosecutor’s office and the armed forces, confirming that the impact caused no direct threat to civilians.
