Poland introduces new vehicle registration plate letters as number combos run out

The Ministry of Infrastructure has begun issuing new regional letters on Polish vehicle registration plates because the existing letter‑number combinations have been exhausted in several voivodeships. Seven regions receive fresh identifiers: V for Lower Silesia (replacing D), J for Lesser Poland (replacing K), A for Masovia (replacing W), Y for Subcarpathia (replacing R), X for Pomerania (replacing G), I for Silesia (replacing S) and M for Greater Poland (replacing P).

The new letters appear first on reduced‑size plates, which have the fewest remaining combinations, and on individualized plates ordered by owners. There is no extra charge—the price remains 80 złoty—and existing registrations stay valid; replacement is not mandatory. Over time, as current letter pools are depleted, the new prefixes will be issued to all new registrations and re‑registrations across the country.
