Poland moves toward nationwide nighttime alcohol sales ban

There is cross-party consensus in the Polish Sejm to introduce a nationwide statutory restriction on alcohol sales during nighttime hours. If no amendments are proposed during the second reading, the new regulations could be adopted as early as this autumn. The proposed legislation aims to create a unified law across the country, moving beyond the current patchwork of restrictions implemented by over 200 local municipalities.

The legislative package may also include a ban on alcohol advertising and promotions, potentially extending to zero-percent alcohol beverages. While there is agreement on nighttime sales limits, a total ban on alcohol sales at petrol stations remains a point of contention, as not all political factions support this specific measure.

Public opinion polls indicate significant support for these restrictions. A June 2026 IBRiS study found that 54.9% of Poles support a nationwide nighttime alcohol ban, while a CBOS study from April 2026 showed nearly 70% support when combining those who strongly support it with those who rather support it. Support for the ban tends to be higher among women and older demographics.
