Poland orders three Saab A26 submarines from Sweden

Poland's State Treasury Armaments Agency has signed a contract with Swedish defence firm Saab to acquire three A26‑type submarines. The deal, valued at roughly SEK 47 billion (about €4.2 billion), also includes a weapons package, training and support services, and a maintenance partnership with Polish industry. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed by 2038.

To bridge the capability gap until the new submarines enter service, Poland will lease the Swedish‑built HMS Södermanland, originally launched in the 1980s, from October 2023 through October 2032. The lease will allow Polish crews to train on Saab’s submarine system while conducting Baltic Sea missions.

The procurement aims to boost Poland's naval strength and enhance security cooperation in the Baltic Sea region.
