Poland‑Sweden A26 submarine deal progresses

Overview

Poland’s naval modernisation moved forward in late June 2026 when Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Sweden’s Ulf Kristersson signed the execution contract for the “Orka” programme, securing three A26 Blekinge‑class submarines from Saab. The deal, valued at roughly SEK 47 billion (≈ $4.8 billion), sets a delivery window through 2038, with the first boat now expected in 2031 and full hand‑over by 2032.

The package includes a full weapons suite—heavy‑weight and light torpedoes and provision for a future missile capability—crew training, long‑term logistics and a maintenance partnership that integrates Polish defence‑industry firms. Saab will carry out maintenance, repair and overhaul work in Poland and coordinate a tender for a submarine‑rescue vessel.

To bridge the capability gap, Poland will lease the upgraded HMSSödermanland, a former Swedish A‑17‑class submarine modernised with Stirling air‑independent propulsion, for crew training beginning in August 2026 and for operational missions in the Baltic Sea during the lease period (October 2023 – October 2032). A support vessel derived from the former HMS Södermanland will also aid training and operations.

On 1 July 2026 Poland deployed the mine‑hunter ORP Mewa to NATO’s Standing Mine Countermeasures Group 1 as part of the Kormoran 2026 contingent, underscoring a broader contribution to Alliance maritime security while the submarine programme proceeds.
