Poland passes law introducing night prohibition and advertising bans

The Polish Sejm has passed an amendment to the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety and Counteracting Alcoholism, aimed at reducing alcohol consumption and improving public safety. The new legislation introduces a nationwide night prohibition, banning the sale of alcohol in shops and at fuel stations between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Local governments may also implement additional restrictions on off-premises sales.

In addition to sales restrictions, the law imposes a total ban on the advertising and promotion of all alcoholic beverages, including beer. Violators face significant penalties, including fines ranging from 30,000 PLN to 1 million PLN or restrictions on liberty. Packaging must also feature health warnings, specifically regarding the risks to pregnant women and minors.

Local craft breweries have expressed strong opposition to the legislation. Producers argue that the broad restrictions may stifle competition and favor large corporations over small businesses. They expressed concerns that the law could lead to the disappearance of artisanal recipes and market diversity. The new regulations are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, pending the completion of the legislative process.
