Poland political tensions rise over defense vetoes and coalition dynamics

Political tensions are rising within the Polish government regarding defense policy and coalition dynamics. Jakub Stefaniak, deputy head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery from the Polish People's Party (PSL), criticized the President's veto of the ‘SAFE’ program. Stefaniak suggested the veto may be politically motivated to hinder Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz’s efforts to develop the domestic arms industry, alleging the President is acting more like a lobbyist for foreign interests than a statesman.

Simultaneously, internal assessments of the governing coalition suggest a period of stagnation. Reports indicate that while the right-wing opposition is actively campaigning, the current government faces voter disillusionment and a lack of momentum. Strategic moves, such as the nomination of Maciej Berek for the Constitutional Tribunal, are being viewed as potential attempts to re-energize the Civic Coalition's base and consolidate support ahead of upcoming political cycles.
