Poland security: Public doubt in military readiness and NATO deterrence

Recent polls and military activities highlight growing security concerns and political divisions in Poland. A United Surveys by IBRiS poll indicates that 63.2% of Poles believe the military and services are not fully prepared to respond effectively to a direct attack or border threat. This skepticism is deeply divided along political lines, with 82% of opposition voters expressing doubt compared to 50% of government supporters.

Public opinion is also split regarding military aid to Ukraine. A Pollster Institute study shows 58% of respondents oppose transferring additional Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, citing concerns over Poland's own air defense capabilities. This follows a recent incident where a Russian missile entered Polish airspace.

In response to regional tensions, NATO has increased military activity in Polish airspace, including the deployment of AWACS and P-8 Poseidon aircraft near the Baltic coast. These maneuvers serve as a deterrent against Russia. Additionally, discussions regarding the ‘NATO Land Warfighting Concept’ suggest an evolving strategy focused on the defense of the eastern flank to prevent Russian aggression in the Baltic states and Poland.
