Poland prepares pilgrimages for 150th anniversary of Gietrzwałd Marian apparitions

Polish dioceses are organizing a series of pilgrimages of the Image of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd to mark the 150th anniversary of the officially recognised Marian apparitions in Gietrzwałd. The schedule runs from 29 August to 6 September, with stops in Głogów, Nowa Sól, Żagań, Kożuchów, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Świebodzin and Zielona Góra, inviting the faithful to pray the rosary and attend Mass.

The upcoming celebrations have also sparked speculation about a possible papal visit. Analysts note that Pope Leon XIV could be invited for a pilgrimage in 2028, as 2027 is a parliamentary election year in Poland and papal trips are traditionally avoided during election years. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has previously extended an invitation, and historians suggest 2028 as the most likely date for a papal pilgrimage to Gietrzwałd.
