Karol Nawrocki's First Year as President Sparks Polarized Opinion and Budget Losses

During the year Nawrocki exercised his veto power 41 times and signed 245 statutes. Analysts estimate that the blocked measures deprived the state budget of between 7.3 billion and 8.2 billion zł, including lost sugar‑tax revenue for the National Health Fund. The veto of the SAFE defence‑loan programme also hampered the deployment of roughly €43.7 billion earmarked for military spending.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign‑policy Minister Radosław Sikorski criticised the president’s use of vetoes and warned against a shift toward a more presidential system.
