Poland's President Karol Nawrocki's first year sparks public split
A United Surveys by IBRiS poll released in late July found that 56 % of Poles view President Karol Nawrocki’s first year positively, while 40.5 % view it negatively. The survey showed a deep partisan divide: 89 % of supporters of the governing coalition rate the year negatively, compared with 94 % of opposition supporters who rate it positively.
During the same period the president exercised his veto power 41 times, sending two bills to the Constitutional Tribunal for preventive review. Analysts estimate that the blocked measures could have added about 7.3 billion zł to the state budget, rising to roughly 8.2 billion zł when the missed sugar‑tax revenue for the National Health Fund is included.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he had contacted Nawrocki about defence matters and criticised the president’s veto of the SAFE law, while foreign‑policy minister Radosław Sikorski warned that the president’s actions risk a shift toward a more presidential system. The combination of a highly polarized public opinion and significant fiscal impact makes the first year of Nawrocki’s presidency a focal point of Polish politics.
