Poland prioritizes domestic defense industry and military growth
Polish leadership has emphasized the necessity of a strong domestic military and defense industry as the foundation of national security. During the Defence24 Security Forum in Karpacz, officials highlighted that while alliances with the United States and European cooperation are vital, Poland must prioritize its own armed forces, trained reserves, and domestic manufacturing.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that Poland maintains defense stability by honoring all previous military procurement agreements. He stated that Poland currently possesses the largest army among European NATO member states, with 221,000 soldiers and rapid reaction reserves. To support modernization, Poland is utilizing the EU's SAFE credit program alongside American loans and government guarantees. The country aims to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Michał Dworczyk stressed that defense expenditures should stimulate the domestic economy. They argued that investments should flow into Polish factories to develop local technologies, patents, and technical expertise, specifically in areas such as drone production, missiles, and 155mm artillery ammunition. The strategy mandates that foreign companies wishing to collaborate with Poland must invest in the local industry through joint ventures to ensure European self-sufficiency.
