Poland's economic expansion and investment trends in EU
Overview
Poland continues to demonstrate significant economic activity, though recent data reveals divergent trends between macroeconomic growth and internal investment. While the GDP grew by 3.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, outperforming much of the EU, internal investment metrics show signs of decline. Data from Bank Pekao indicates that over the last decade, the ratio of investment expenditures to financial surplus in private enterprises has dropped from 58% to 46%. The small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector has been particularly impacted, seeing a 17% decrease in investment funded by profits, while the number of large Polish companies capable of competing internationally has fallen below pre-pandemic levels.
In contrast, the financial sector reported strong performance in the first half of 2026. Investment fund management companies (TFI) saw a 45.9% increase in net profit compared to the previous year, reaching 763.3 million PLN. The insurance sector also grew, with total premiums reaching 47.3 billion PLN, a 7% year-on-year increase, though the property insurance segment faced a 6.4% decline in technical results.
Strategic technological and energy initiatives remain a priority. A consortium including Innergo Systems and various technical universities is developing ‘Świetlik’, a 5G and digital twin system for emergency services. Simultaneously, the Polish Dual Use Chamber is advocating for prioritized funding in drones, space, and digital solutions to meet NATO standards. In the energy sector, Energa-Operator and PAIH are working to attract renewable energy investors to northern Poland, as businesses increasingly utilize corporate power purchase agreements (cPPA) for risk management and stable green energy pricing.
