Poland proposes combined European army for eastern front
At the Warsaw Security Forum, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed confidence that Europe will organize a combined army by the end of the decade, potentially focused on the eastern front. Sikorski suggested that a European force in the Baltic region could serve as a deterrent against Russian military intentions.
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Sikorski emphasized the necessity of providing financial, military, and humanitarian support to Kyiv to withstand the upcoming winter. German official Johann Wadephul noted that while Russian attacks on energy infrastructure will make the winter difficult, Russia has not achieved significant breakthroughs in the war.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband advocated for increased sanctions against Russia and further defensive aid for Ukraine. He also highlighted the need for the European Union to revisit the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, a move that faces opposition from Belgium, where much of the blocked capital is held.
