Poland proposes nationwide nighttime alcohol sales ban

A proposed amendment to the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety in Poland aims to implement a nationwide nighttime ban on alcohol sales. Under the current draft, the prohibition would apply to all points of sale, including fuel stations, between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

Earlier versions of the proposal sought to completely ban alcohol sales at fuel stations. However, following opposition from the government and the Office of the President, a compromise was reached. Fuel stations will retain the right to sell alcohol during daytime hours, though they must adhere to the new nighttime restrictions.

If the Sejm passes the amendment, the regulations are expected to take effect on January 1, 2027. Local municipalities will also have the authority to tighten these rules, potentially extending the ban to hours such as 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM. The Polish Oil and Gas Industry Organization has expressed concerns, suggesting that restrictions on stations might simply shift demand to discount stores rather than addressing alcohol-related issues.
