Poland proposes stronger NATO exercises near Kaliningrad

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed that NATO conduct “stronger” military exercises near Russia's Kaliningrad enclave. Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, Sikorski suggested that these maneuvers could create uncertainty for Russia and pressure Moscow to redeploy forces from the conflict in Ukraine.

Sikorski noted that Poland is closely monitoring the region, observing that Kaliningrad currently lacks significant Russian ground forces due to troop transfers to Ukraine. He clarified that the objective is not to seize territory, but to apply military pressure to force a reassessment of Russian force allocation.

Russian analysts have expressed concern regarding the proposal. Yuri Baranchik, a Russian analyst, warned that using military threats against Russian territory as a political tool increases the risk of miscalculation. He suggested that any perceived attack on Kaliningrad could trigger a severe response from Russia, potentially including the use of nuclear weapons as a deterrent.
